4) Reports:

·        Scoutmaster – Great trip to Camp Phillips, very good turnout.  As usual, our boys were the best behaved!

·        Secretary

·        Treasurer – We are currently solvent, the troop has approx. $1100 and the Scouts $2800.  There is a $780 bill yet to be paid that will reduce the balance.

·        Outdoor/activities coordinator

·        Summer camp 2006, Camp Phillips, July 2-8 (reported above)

·        Court of Honor & troop cookout, July 16 – 6:00 PM at Miller Park by St. Ed’s school.  Every family to bring one hot and one cold dish to share, meat and drinks will be provided.  Everyone should bring lawn chairs and their own tableware.

·        Troop campout, Aug 19-20 – Canoe trip down the Upper Iowa River from Kendallville to Bluffton on Saturday.  Sunday is an optional shooting sports activity at Decorah, a parent or adult arranged by parent must be present for youth to shoot on Sunday.  We will need extra parents for this campout as Al will be out of town.  Past trips have been a great time!

·        Advancement coordinator

·        Advancement activities – no advancements were recorded last month.  A number of merit badges were earned at summer camp (will have count next month).

·        Merit Badge College, Nov 4 – Jon Beyer will organize this activity.  Stay tuned when information becomes available in August or September.

·        Personal Fitness Merit Badge update – The Scouts have been working to complete the requirements (10 are still active).  The final session will be held in 2 weeks.

·        Cycling merit badge – Al has a schedule starting July 24, and will try to finish by the end of August.  Helmets are required.

·        Chaplain

·        Mary Pederson contacted the troop about a father-son retreat this fall, and would like the troop to organize and participate.

·        Training coordinator

·        Equipment coordinator

·        Storage shed update – Steve Davis mailed letters asking for donations.  At this time $1150 has been raised for the shed.  We believe at least $10,000 needs to be raised before beginning construction.

·        Fundraising coordinator

·        Pop can collection fundraiser, June 10 report - $370 was raised

·        Pop can collection fundraisers July15 and Aug 12 – volunteers are needed.

·        Sturgis Falls adult fundraiser for Scoutmaster fund, June 24, report – waiting for the check

·        Popcorn sales, chairman needed – will ask for volunteer at troop meetings

·        Wreath sales, chairman needed – will ask for volunteer at troop meetings

·        Membership coordinator

5) Old Business

·        Wood Badge training for adults, Sep 8-10, Oct 6-8 – Reminder – interested adults must sign up at the scout office as soon as possible so the council can determine if there is enough interest to proceed.  $190 per adult.

6) New Business

·        Steve Murphy announced that a boundary waters trip is being planned for next summer, likely to coincide with the Deere shutdown in June 2007.  9 have already signed up, and we need to have commitments by Dec 31.  All scouts and adults must be swimmers.  Watch for details for the district swim program in Jan/Feb.  2nd year scouts must be accompanied by a parent, 3rd year scouts will not be allowed on crews with long portages.

·        The group discussed campout meal planning, as snacks and soda pop seem to be creeping back into the menus.  As most Scouts have earned the Personal Fitness merit badge, a concerted effort will be made to help them make the connection to good nutrition choices.

·        The group discussed rowdy behavior at meetings and summer camp brought up by concerned parents with Scouts that may have been picked on.  While it is impossible to keep watch on everyone all of the time, we do expect the Scouts to treat others with respect and the way they expect to be treated.  It is the troop’s and Al’s policy to deal directly with unacceptable behavior, first with the Scout, then if necessary with the Scout and his parents, and if the behavior persists, with the parents and the troop committee (this has not been needed in the past).  This will be discussed again with the Scouts, and the “free time” in the gym will instead be used for patrol games in the basement.  Anyone with behavior concerns should bring them to Al or a member of the troop committee.

7) Announcements

·        Next parents meeting Monday, August 21, 2006 at The Upper Deck, food available at 7:30, meeting starts at 8:00 PM.  This meeting is for the months of August and September.
