Transporting
Scouts – Background: The troop has had
several instances in the last several years where parents driving borrowed
vehicles from dealerships have encountered minor accidents. The insurance deductible was paid by the
driver of the car, naturally making them reluctant to drive in similar
circumstances in the future. The purpose
of this discussion was to set policy regarding troop reimbursement for future
trips (also retroactive to last year).
Main discussion points – Discussion
started with deductible reimbursement for borrowed vehicles only, and the scope
was expanded to include personal vehicles while transporting scouts to and from
activities. No affordable policy is
available for the troop to cover this deductible, any reimbursement would need
to come from the troop treasury. This
discussion strictly limited to sheet metal or auto body damage incurred during
scout transport, maximum of $500 deductible.
Transmissions and other mechanical failures not covered as prior
condition is unknown. Medical and other
expenses to be covered by driver’s insurance, and when exhausted then covered
by BSA insurance. Troop tour permits
must be filed for all covered activities.
Regular meetings and local activities where scouts are transported by
parents are excluded. Steve Murphy will
need to review individual policies regarding deductible limits and
coverages. These preceding discussion
points are for information only, the actual troop guidelines are being prepared
and will be shared when complete.
